Use Candles with Care
Each October, the NFPA (National Fire Protection
Association) and departments across America observe Fire Prevention week
to mark the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and to
promote public awareness of fire safety.
Candles are Dangerous nightlights!
NFPA discourages the use of candles in bedrooms and
other areas where people may fall asleep.
Avoid using candles during power outages. Have
flashlights, batteries, and battery powered lighting on hand for
emergency lighting.
Tips for safe candle use
-
Always stay in the room where candles are being
burned.
-
Keep lit candles at least one foot away from
anything that can burn.
-
Keep candles away from children.
-
Use sturdy candle holders that won't tip or burn.
-
Burn candles on sturdy uncluttered surfaces.
-
Keep lit candles at least one foot away from
curtains, mattresses and other combustibles.
-
Trim candle wicks to 1/4 inch before lighting.
-
When lighting candles, keep your hair and clothing
away from the flame.
-
Extinguish candles when they burn to within two
inches of their holder.
-
Be careful not to splatter hot wax when
extinguishing a candle.
-
Place candles away from windows or doorways or
anywhere where drafts could affect the flame.
Supervise Children
Store candles, matches, and lighters high and out of
children's sight and reach, preferably in a locked cabinet.
The number of candle fires per month almost double in
December, during the holiday season. Keep candles away from
Christmas trees, wreaths or other decorations.
